The Merritt Line ~ Understanding Cousins
This is to help one understand the terminology of cousins.
First Cousin: your father or mother's brother or sister's child
First cousin once removed: the first cousin's child
First cousin twice removed: the child of the first cousin once removed
Second cousin: your grandparent's brother or sister's grandchild
Second cousin once removed: the second cousin's child
First cousin three times removed: the child of your second cousin
Third cousin: your great-grandparent's brother or sister's great-grandchild
Third cousin once removed: the child of your third cousin
Third cousin twice removed: the child of your third cousin once removed
Sibling –have parents in common
Grandnephew or grand niece: the grandchild of your brother or sister
Great aunt or great uncle: the sister or brother of your grandparents
Great granduncle or great grandaunt: the sister or brother of your great-grandparents
Stepfather or stepmother: the husband or wife of a parent from a subsequent marriage
Ancestor: the person from whom you directly descended
Descendant: the person who descends directly from you
Lineal: relations in direct line either ascent or descent
Collateral: relations who are linked by a common ancestor, i.e. aunts, uncles, cousins
